Quilt Top Finished

This quilt top was worked on all last year, mostly at craft shows.  I decided it would save time to take a sewing machine (my Featherweight) and get some sewing done during breaks in selling to customers.  And there were a lot of breaks.  People would show interest in the sewing machine, but I don't really think it helped me sell more items.  Anyway, the pattern is "Trail Mix" designed by Mabeth Oxenreider.  I was always drawn to scrappy quilts, especially ones that had the "lines" like this one has.

The pattern is in  "Scrap-Lovers' Quilts" published by Better Homes and Gardens.  I've had the book for a long time and finally got around to making it.  As you can see, there is a lot of sewing involved!  It measures approximately 77" x 115".  I need to get the quilting done in time for a guild meeting in September because we are having a UFO challenge and it was picked from my list.  I just finished putting the borders on.  It is too big for my design wall, so it is folded in half.

I plan to get it basted next week along with a couple small donation quilts.  Basting large ones like this is not my favorite activity!

Thanks for visiting and happy quilting!

  1. This is wonderful! I've wanted to make this quilt for years. It's a classic pattern. You are so ambitious to get this quilted by September. You must be doing it by machine.

  2. That’s a fantastic quilt Ruth. Not surprised that folks found the Featherweight more interesting. I had a craft stall at a country fair many years ago and everyone wanted to buy the antique tablecloths we’d used to cover trestle tables.

  3. Congratulations on getting this big quilt all together. It is on my to-do list since I first saw that one. I am saving Batik fabrics for it. I haven't seen one with Batik yet, so I'll make one. Love your rendition and it is saved in my Pinterest pages. Have a great day. ;^)

  4. I love her patterns, though I don't make them myself. I chose her pattern for a triple 4-patch in a barn raising setting that came out in a magazine decades ago. I was planning to make it, but hadn't started, when my Mom said she'd like to make it. I wasn't going to make it right away, so I loaned her the magazine. She made it and gifted it to me, so I never made it myself. I just love the small chain blocks that she threads through many of her designs.
I don't like basting large quilts either. Lately I have done a lot of hiring a long arm quilter to baste it for me. Have you decide what design you will quilt on it?

  5. Oh my that is a lot of pieces! But it's beautiful. Good luck getting it finished in time - you can do it!
