I finished this lap size donation quilt a few days ago, so I thought I would show you. I cut the 2 1/2" squares years ago and had some of them sewn into 4 patches. Then, I finally got them out and put this together randomly. I love scrappy quilts.
I quilted it with swirly circles and for the border I used the braided wheat design by Lori Kennedy at The Inbox Jaunt. It took me a while around the border to get it pretty good.
This last picture shows the border up close in a better section of it. I won't show you the first section and I probably should have practiced it more before I started quilting it on the quilt.

I also used a blanket stitch to stitch down the binding. A friend at my quilt guild does that and I thought it looked pretty good. With this blue/white design, you can barely see the blanket stitching any way. Actually, I don't mind sewing the binding down by hand - it's more relaxing. But, the main thing is that it is DONE!
This makes a beautiful donation quilt! I love Lori Kennedy's braided wheat and the similar heart motifs, in fact just used them in my first donation quilt of the year. Machine binding just seems to make more sense with donation quilts since they most likely won't see the same careful handling we give our own quilts, especially when they go to shelters or nursing homes.
ReplyDeleteGreat job--Lori has wonderful designs, and such clear tutorials.
ReplyDeleteI do not have the blanket stitch on a single one of my machines! That is the only "decorative" stitch I don't have that I want. Times when you need a binding done quickly, or when you want to do some machine applique with a blanket stitch--sure would come in handy. You are right--can't even tell you have used a blanket stitch here!
That is a very pretty quilt and best of all, it is done! You have a great start to the year!
ReplyDeleteAll those tiny pieces made a very pretty little quilt! Your quilting looks great too! I actually love finishing bindings by hand; at least I would if I could ever get a quilt that far along again! ---"Love"
ReplyDeleteVery pretty quilt and your quilting looked amazing! I like that design...gonna have to file that one away for whenever I decide to tackle the mountain of tops I'm avoiding...
ReplyDeleteCongratulations! You are on a roll and putting all of us to shame. I haven't finished one quilt last year and here you are with two already. WOW. And it's a beauty to top it off. Kudos to you! ;^)
ReplyDeleteDarling! Great way to use up the squares!! Your quilting is very nice.
ReplyDeleteYour machine quilting is as marvellous as your quilts.
ReplyDeleteYay for the finish! Love that braided wheat stitch.
