WHAT DO YOU THINK?

I have finished 24 Ohio Star blocks that I will use to make a donation quilt for children's hospital.  It will be for a teen-aged boy and is made out of men's shirt fabric.  I took pictures of two lay-outs and want your opinion.  The first one is must mixed up and the second one has diagonal rows of the same color blocks.  I'm leaning towards the second one.

The blocks measure 9" finished so without sashing, this part will measure 36" x 54".  I will be adding a border to bring the size up to the requested size, which is large enough to cover the bed but not hang over (because of the side rails).  Do you think I should add a narrow sashing also?  I kind of like the blocks right next to each other.

I don't know what fabric I will use for the border, but it would have to be darker.  I'll wait until I get home to see what I have on hand.  Out of sight - out of mind!

I hope there is a boy who won't mind the pink looking fabric.  It is actually kind of a coral color and white weave, but looks like pink at a distance.

This is our last week with DS/DIL and then we will spend a few days in Sisters and a few days with BIL/SIL - then return to Texas.  We're looking forward to going home, but have had a wonderful trip and good times with family.

I hope you have a wonderful 4th of July and that it isn't too hot!

  1. I lean toward the ordered rows, too, but that is the OCD in me that I try to fight off when I can. I don't think a boy in a hospital bed will care whether or not they are in rows by color, so do what you like.
If the coral pink was a guy's shirt, then it can be in a guy's quilt!
You have been quite the travelers. I would think home will look very good!

  2. I think anyone would enjoy this quilt, even a boy. And coral really isn't pink and being a boy, he probably won't even notice. I like the first version, as I don't like things to be too matched, without sashing. Either way, it's going to be a wonderful, and much appreciated, quilt.

  3. Both arrangements work! I like it random if I thought it would be going to a boy...but it's just an opinion! Happy Quilting, Lorraine

  4. I like the random arrangement without sashing, but these blocks will look good however you decide to set them. Enjoy the rest of your trip!

  5. I love your quilt and have a lot of men's shirting fabrics too. Maybe it's time to pull those out!! I prefer the random setting over the ordered one. Thank you for sharing.

  6. Great blocks! I'd go without sashing, but I would vote for the diagonal lines; that blue really sings! ---"Love"

  7. I like the second setting. I like that look of the colors on a diagonal. In any case either setting will make a great guy quilt.
Enjoy your last week with family. Happy Forth of July.

  8. I'm leaning toward the 2nd one! Like Janet - I LIKE the order!! I think you should keep the blocks right next to each other, but add a narrow border and then a wider border in a darker color. So glad that your trip has been enjoyable - enjoy and safe travels!!

    Blessings

  11. I like the 2nd one, with the diagonal blue block layout. Coral? Use a quilting thread in a bluish or grayish color - would tone down any suggestions of girly.

  12. I'm no use to you Ruth. I saw one with the stars set on point and setting triangles. Add it to the list!

  14. Definitely the diagonal set! Gives your eye something to follow. I'm certain any "guy" teenager would appreciate it!
