On Wednesday DH and I met my BIL/SIL at Cascade Locks, Oregon to go on a 5 hour cruise of part of the Columbia River.  We got there kind of early, so drove around the town a little.  I noticed a quilt block on the museum and as we continued down the road, there were lots of quilt blocks on houses, etc.  (didn't see any barns).  What a pleasant surprise!  I wondered who organized the placement of so many blocks.  I suppose there are a lot of quilters in town.  It's a small town and we didn't see a quilt shop or I would have wanted to stop to see if they knew.  Anyway, here are some of the quilt blocks that we saw.  The first 2 were on the same house.

This one was in front of city hall!
Unfortunately, some of the photos didn't turn out very well and then I forgot to take a picture of the one on the museum.

This is the boat that we went on - it's a sternwheeler (paddle boat).

It was a beautiful day and the scenery was awesome!

Now, for what is on my design wall.  I showed the pattern for this unicorn pillow (or quilt) here.  I'm making it for my DGD for either Christmas or her 11th birthday (which is 3 days after Christmas).  The pillow will be 26" square.

I wouldn't want to make a whole quilt with 9 of these blocks!  It was fun, but kind of tedious.  I want to get it finished in plenty of time.

I think our weather is going to change now.  Next week the forecast is for highs in the 70s!  Yea!!

  1. What a nice surprise to see all the barn quilts. I absolutely love your quilt in your header. Hugs.

  2. What a fun thing with the quilt block, but you bad there was no explanation. The cruise sounds like fun and the unicorn is amazing! I think if you decided to do more, you could mass produce them and it wouldn't be terribly tedious - no more than just one, really. And now you've got my wheels turning again. (And oh, how I do NOT need any more projects!)

  3. What a fun excursion that must have been! I love all those quilt blocks everywhere; there must be lots of quilters there, and probably a quilt store too hidden away somewhere, known only to quilters. The unicorn is so cute; your granddaughter will love it! I don't think I'd like to make more than one of those either, but she may want you to make a quilt to go with the pillow-----just thinkin'. ---"Love"

  4. Looks like a lovely time on the water--and the quilt blocks along the way are an added bonus.
A very pretty unicorn, but I don't think I would want to do that 9 times, either. :)

  5. Love all those quilt block painted signs.
    cute unicorn
its getting chilly in CT. yay!

  6. Greetings! This is my first visit to your blog! We are a team of volunteers and
starting a new initiative in a community in the same niche.
Your blog provided us valuable information to work
on. You have done a wonderful job!

  7. I've seen the sternwheeler and it looks like a lot of fun!! How cool you got to go on it!!
The quilt blocks must be new since I was there. More info:

  8. The gorge is breath taking!!! I never get tired of of the view! What a fun trip!

  9. How fun to find all the quilt blocks! Your trip sounds like fun, we have talked about taking a trip on the river some time we are there. Looks so pretty! Love the unicorn. It looks like it takes some time and concentration. She will love it!

  10. We're going to Oregon in October to drive the Columbia River. Loved reading your blog post about the River Cruise you took - hope we can work that in on our trip. Love the barn quilts too!
