AMISH COUNTRY AND BARNS

We spent time in amish country in Pennsylvania, New York, Ohio, and Indiana. We didn't actually plan it that way, but it ended up that way. I love their buggies and barns! This buggy was at a farm that has a little store. We were looking for baked goods, but it was the wrong day, so we bought some swiss cheese. DH saw a bag of candy that he wanted - grapefruit candy. I had never heard of grapefruit candy before, but I tried it. Wow! It was really good, so we went back for two more bags. We are bad....
This is an amish farm. I wanted a picture of the sheep.
Who ever heard of a blue barn? When I saw this one, I grabbed my camera and took a picture as we drove by. Don't these people know that barns are supposed to be red???
Yes, I saw some Amish quilts, but didn't feel comfortable taking pictures in their shops. I suppose I could have asked, but didn't. I did buy an amish rug, some jars of jelly and a cookbook. Now we are on our way to the Chicago area and will visit my sister, brother and other relatives. Have a nice Labor Day weekend!

  3. Oh...now I want to paint my barn purple! If they can have a blue one, why can't I have a purple one? (Mine is red now and matches the doors to my house nicely...) Grapefruit candy sounds wonderful - I'm going to keep my eyes open for that. Have a fun time with your relatives!

  6. You two are becoming vagabonds! What fun you must be having! The blue barn is pretty, but they must not have dust storms like we have in Texas or it would be looking dirty! Have fun with your family. ---"Love"

  9. I've enjoyed your posts about your trip. What beautiful countryside. We need to leave the west coast next year and go back and visit eastern U.S. again. It's been a few years, and that's too long.

  10. I can't wait until I retire too, I'll probably have to be pried out of my sewing chair! My in-laws live in Indiana and when we visit them we always go to the Amish stores and buy cheeses and various other things that I never heard of like pickled asparagus. I've never seen a blue barn before but I've seen a lot of black barns in Kentucky and never could find out why they were that color.

  13. I have loved the Amish ever since I first learned about them back in the early 70's when my husband was a newspaper reporter for The Battle Creek Enquirer & News, and did a six week feature story on the Amish of Centerville, Indiana. I was able to go with him and get into the homes of some of them. I love their old fashioned ways so much. But, I also love my modern world. These pictures are beautiful. That blue barn is a trip!

  14. I just love the Amish Country and how pretty their farms always look. Thanks for sharing the pictures. Its fuuny, when we were in the Lancaster area of Pa visiting the quilt shops, much of the fabric they sold was printed by Springs industry, right here in my home town.
